Phoenix monsoon season
hair survival guide.

Short answer: change only what your hair asks you to change. Humidity can mean frizz for one person and flatness for another. Start with one styling adjustment, treat buildup only if it is present, and consider a gloss only when the tone has actually shifted.

How monsoon weather can show up in your hair

Phoenix monsoon weather can bring abrupt changes in humidity, wind, dust, heat, and sun exposure. How hair responds depends on texture, porosity, styling products, color history, and how much time you spend outdoors. The weather is a variable, not a diagnosis.

You might notice more frizz, less volume, a different curl pattern, or color that looks duller. You might notice none of those. Watch for the change that is actually happening before adding products or booking a treatment.

Five adjustments to try, if you need them

  1. Test one anti-humidity styling change. If your normal style is not holding, try a small amount of a product made for your texture. Apply it as directed and judge the result before layering on anything else.
  2. Clarify only when buildup is the problem. Sweat, dust, hard water, and styling products can accumulate, but frequency varies. Clarifying and chelating products can target different kinds of buildup; ask which one fits your hair and follow the label.
  3. Use heat with a plan. Some textures hold better with diffusing; others do well with partial air-drying. Use heat protectant as directed and choose the lowest effective setting rather than following one drying percentage.
  4. Condition according to feel. If the hair feels dry or less flexible, a conditioner or mask suited to its porosity may help. A fixed weekly mask is not necessary for everyone, and more product is not always more moisture.
  5. Refresh tone when it has shifted. A gloss can adjust tone and add shine when it is the right service. Hair By Rachel Charles currently lists Gloss at $90 for 60 minutes; ask first if you are not sure what is making the color look different.

What to skip

  • Changing everything at once. If five new products go in on the same day, you will not know which one helped or caused buildup.
  • Adding extra heat to fight the weather. More passes are not automatically better. Use protectant as directed and the lowest effective setting.
  • Treating every dull result as dryness. Buildup, tone shift, and dryness need different responses. Ask before stacking a clarifier, mask, and pigmented product.
  • Moving an appointment just because it is monsoon season. Keep the timing that supports your actual color goal and condition.

When to come into the salon

If your hair still feels unusually rough, looks dull, or the color has shifted, a consultation can help sort buildup, dryness, damage, and tone before another product is added. If the issue is tone, book the current $90, 60-minute Gloss or a free consultation if you're not sure what your hair needs.
